Pim Onno Vermeulen (23 May 1947 – 7 January 2025) was a Dutch politician.
Biography
Vermeulen was a member of the Labour Party. After having been a councilor, Vermeulen served as municipal executive (wethouder) of Rotterdam for 16 years from 1978 to 1994, succeeding Jan van der Ploeg. He was a member of the council led by mayor Bram Peper.[1] During his period he was concerned with many urban renewal projects. He bought 6000 dilapidated homes of a slum landlord and renovated them. He was involved in consultation with residents' organizations and action groups.[2][3] Next to that, working together with urban planner Riek Bakker, he was involved in the development of the so called "The New Rotterdam", including building the Erasmus Bridge and the Kop van Zuid neighborhood. He also laid the foundation for the construction of civil engineering project Maasvlakte 2.[4][1]
Vermeulen died in Rotterdam on 7 January 2025, at the age of 77.[1][5] Mayor of Rotterdam Carola Schouten responded to his death that "we are losing a great leader committed to Rotterdam".[2]
