Punshi Yumoiba (Old Manipuri: ꯄꯨꯟꯁꯤ ꯌꯨꯃꯣꯢꯄ, romanized: Punshi Yumoipa) was the tenth king of the Khuman dynasty in Ancient Manipur (today's Manipur, India). He ruled from around the year 620 CE to 700 CE.[1][2] He was the son of King Laiphangba and ruled after him. He lived during the time of the Meitei king Naothingkhong of the Ningthouja dynasty.[3][4]
Reign and Alliances
During his rule, Punshi Yumoiba made the capital city Mayang Imphal more important and powerful. This city had already been built by his father.[1][2][3][4] He became a close ally of King Naothingkhong of the Meitei people, who ruled from 663 to 763 CE. Punshi Yumoiba gave shelter to Naothingkhong and even gave his daughter, Keirunghangbi, to him in marriage. As part of this alliance, Punshi gave some land from the Khuman kingdom to Naothingkhong. Some nobles of the Khuman clan did not agree with this and started a revolt led by Senpa Mimapa.[1][2][3][4]
Religion and Traditions
Punshi Yumoiba also supported the worship of the goddess Imoinu. He started her worship inside the royal palace at Mayang Imphal. This helped make her worship an important part of Khuman traditions.[1][2][3][4]
