Robert Wilson (director)
Robert Wilson (October 4, 1941 – July 31, 2025) was an American experimental theater stage director and playwright. He was called by The New York Times as "[America]'s – or even the world's – [most important] 'theater artist.'"[1] He also worked as a choreographer, performer, painter, sculptor, video artist, and sound and lighting designer. Wilson was born in Waco, Texas. He was best known for his work with Philip Glass and Lucinda Childs on Einstein on the Beach, and for his works with Tom Waits.
Wilson was openly gay.[2] For many years, he was in a relationship with Andy de Groat, a dancer and choreographer.[3]
Wilson died on July 31, 2025 from a short-illness at his home in Water Mill, New York at the age of 83.[4][5]
