Rudolf Leopold Raftl ( 7 February 1911 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary - 5 September 1994 in Vienna) was an Austrian football player. He played as goalkeeper mainly for SK Rapid Wien . He also played for the Austrian national football team. During the Nazi occupation of Austria he played also for the German national football team.
Career
Rudolf Raftl began his professional career with ASV Hertha Wien in the 1928/29 season. He then moved to SK Rapid. He won the championship with the team in 1935 ,1938, 1940 and 1941. Rapid competed for the German Cup and the German championship. In 1938, Rudolf Raftl won the German Cup and in 1941 he was in goal in the championship final against FC Schalke 04. After the end of the Second World War, the goalkeeper played for First Vienna FC 1894 for two more seasons from 1946 to 1948. He then worked as a player-coach at Heiligenstädter SV. Then he was coach at SK Herzogenburg in 1949.
International
Rudolf Raftl played six international matches for the Austrian national team and finished fourth at the 1934 World Cup in Italy. He made his debut in 1933. After qualifying for the 1938 World Cup, Austria was forced to withdraw from the competition after the Anschluss, as the Austrian national team was disbanded. He played for the German Reich. He played both matches at the 1938 World Cup in France.
On October 26, 1938, to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of The Football Association, a match was played in London between the England national team and a continental selection assembled by FIFA. Raftl was nominated as the reserve goalkeeper for the Italian Aldo Olivieri and ultimately did not play in the mainland selection at Highbury. In a preparatory match versus Netherlands a few days earlier, he was substituted in the second half.
