Shamsuddin bin Dali (1 January 1929 – 4 June 2013), better known as S. Shamsuddin, was a Singaporean actor and comedian. He acted in Malayan films in the 1950s and 1960s.[1]

Career

In 1948, Shamsuddin visited the Malay Film Productions (MFP) studio at Jalan Ampas because he wanted to see how films were made. His visit was lucky, because he was given a small part as an extra in the film Chempaka, directed by B. S. Rajhans. A few days later, he got a job at MFP as a carpenter, making film sets. At the same time, he also worked as an extra or dancer in films.

Later, he got a role in the film Aloha, also directed by Rajhans. In this movie, he acted in scenes with a lot of dialogue, which was unusual for a new actor. His funny role in the film, together with actors like Osman Gumanti, Mariam, P. Ramlee, A. R. Tompel, and D. Harris, showed that he had real talent. After that, more film offers came, and Shamsuddin became a popular comedian in Malay films. He often worked with Aziz Sattar and the famous actor P. Ramlee, especially in the well-known Bujang Lapok film series.

Personal life

S. Shamsuddin married Puteh binti Esmoon in 1954. They had seven children and 14 grandchildren.

Death

After several years of poor health, S. Shamsuddin died at 10:56 am on 4 June 2013 at his home in Bukit Batok. He was 84 years old.[2] On 5 June 2013, he was buried at the Pusara Abadi Muslim Cemetery in Lim Chu Kang.[3]
