On 13 December 2023, during the broader Israeli ground operation in Shuja'iyya, fighters from Hamas’s Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades launched an attack against Israeli Golani Brigade forces in the dense Kasbah area of Shuja'iyya. The assault resulted in the deaths of ten Israeli soldiers, including two senior officers.[5][6][7] Reports indicate there were no casualties among the attackers.[8]
