Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs
Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs (often abbreviated as SCSC) is an organisation in Scotland. It represents many chiefs of old Scottish clans and families who are recognised by the Lord Lyon King of Arms.
History
The council was started in 1951 by Diana Hay, 23rd Countess of Erroll, who was also the Lord High Constable of Scotland at that time.[1] Since then, the council has met regularly to talk about important issues for the clan system.
As of August 2023, Sir Malcolm MacGregor of MacGregor, chief of Clan Gregor, is serving as the Convenor (leader) of the council. He took over the job after Donald MacLaren, chief of Clan MacLaren, stepped down in July 2023. Sir Malcolm had previously held the position before MacLaren.[2]
Objectives
The council is non-political. Its main goals are to:
- Talk about matters that affect Scottish chiefs, clans, and family names.
- Share their views with the UK Government, the Scottish Government, and other official bodies.
- Communicate with local councils, the media, and the public.
- Work with clan and family groups both in the UK and overseas.
- Help people learn about the history and role of chiefs and clans.
- Protect the titles, coats of arms, or other clan symbols from being used wrongly or for profit :contentReference[oaicite:3]{index=3}.
