The Tacoma Rainiers are a Minor League Baseball team from Tacoma, Washington.[1] They play baseball at the Triple-A (AAA) level, the most difficult level before Major League Baseball, against other baseball teams in the Pacific Coast League (a group of 10 baseball teams at the same level).[1] The Rainiers are partnered with the Seattle Mariners, a Major League Baseball team. When a player shows that he plays well at this level, he may be moved up to play for the Mariners.
The team started playing baseball in 1960 as the Tacoma Giants. The team changed their name to the Tacoma Cubs in 1966, Tacoma Twins in 1972, Tacoma Yankees in 1978, Tacoma Tugs in 1979, and Tacoma Tigers in 1980. They became the Tacoma Rainiers in 1995 because Mount Rainier is located near Tacoma.
The Rainiers have played at a stadium called Cheney Stadium since 1960.
