Tangkap Najib rally

The Tangkap Najib rally, also called the #TangkapNajib Protest,[1] was a demonstration in Kuala Lumpur on 1 August 2015.[2] A youth activist group called Demi Malaysia organized the peaceful rally.[3] They wanted Prime Minister of Malaysia Najib Razak to resign because of the 1Malaysia Development Berhad scandal.[4]

Police arrested 29 people, some only 14 years old. They were held at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters. They could be punished under Section 143 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum of 20 years in jail.[5] Some of the people arrested were activist Anne Ooi, also called 'Auntie Bersih', Jay Jay Dennis, who worked for Klang MP Charles Santiago, and student activist Fahmi Zainol.[6]
