The Argentine water frog (Telmatobius pisanoi) is a frog. It lives in Argentina.[2][3][1]

Home

This frog spends almost all its time in the water. It lives in bog streams places with small woody plants. It does not live in places that human beings have changed.[1] Scientists saw this frog between 3600 and 4200 meters above sea level.[2]

People

Between 1949 and 1989, scientists used this frog in laboratories. They would use this frog to study the way chemicals in the body work, allergies, the way very young things grow inside eggs or their mothers, how to make pictures of big pieces of DNA, and other things. Scientists do not use this frog in laboratories now.[1]

People catch other frogs in Telmatobius to eat and make into medicine, but they do not catch this frog.[1]

Danger

Scientists from the IUCN and from the Argentina National Red List say this frog is in big danger of dying out. People let animals eat grass too much in the places where the frog lives, and soemtimes the grassy places catch on fire. The weather and rain have also changed. Landslides and fish from other places for example trout, can kill this species. Human beings also change the places where the frog lives by turning streams into canals for boats and driving four-wheel-drive cars through the bogs. Scientists used to use this frog in laboratories, but they do not do this now.[1]

Scientists found the fungus Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis on one dead frog in 2006, so they think the fungal disease chytridiomycosis may also kill this frog.[1]
