Treaty of Nanking
The British forced China to sign the Treaty of Nanking after China lost the First Opium War in 1842. The treaty stated that China had to give Britain Hong Kong, 2 billion dollars cash, and open 5 port cities. This led China to give up sovereignty to Europe.[1]
