Tumaba (also spelled Tumaapa or Tumapa) was the second known ruler of the early Khuman dynasty in ancient Kangleipak (now called Manipur).[1][2][3][4]
He ruled after his father Aalong, who was the founder of the Khuman royal family. Tumaba ruled from around 220 to 260 CE. During his time, the older shared royal line between the Khuman and Luwang families was split, and both formed their own separate dynasties.[1][2][3][4]
Biography
Family and background
Tumaba was born into the new Khuman dynasty, which came from the older joint royal family shared with the Luwang dynasty. His father Aalong created the Khuman dynasty, while his uncle Pamingnaba started the Luwang dynasty.[1][2][3][4]
Rule
Tumaba became king after Aalong died. He ruled in the early 3rd century CE, possibly from 220 to 260 CE. During his rule, the Khuman kingdom grew stronger and had more control along the west side of the Imphal River.[5][3]
Tumaba lived at the same time as Khuyoi Tompok of the Ningthouja dynasty, who ruled from 154 to 264 AD.[5][6] That means both kings ruled at the same time, during a period when the Khuman, Luwang, and Ningthouja dynasties were all becoming powerful in the central valley of ancient Manipur.[5][1][2]
Successor
Tumaba was followed by his son, Lungba, who continued building and leading the Khuman kingdom.[7]
