Tun Tun Nyi

Tun Tun Nyi (Burmese: ထွန်းထွန်းညီ; pronounced: [tʰʊ́ɰ̃ tʰʊ́ɰ̃ ɲì]; born Myanmar) is a Burmese military officer who served as the vice chairman of the Tatmadaw True News Information Team, the media and public relations group of the Tatmadaw (Myanmar military).^[1] He was known as a spokesperson for the military during major events like the 2021 military coup.^[2][3]

Not much is known about Tun Tun Nyi's early life or education. It is believed that he studied at the Defence Services Academy, like many senior officers in the military.^[4]

Tun Tun Nyi served in the Myanmar Army and became a major general.^[5][6] Around 2018, he was appointed vice chairman of the Tatmadaw True News Information Team.^[7][8] In this role, he often appeared at press conferences to explain the military’s position on political and military events.^{[9][10][11][12]}

As vice chairman, Tun Tun Nyi helped defend the military’s actions, especially after the Rohingya conflict in 2017 and the 2021 military coup.^[13] He often appeared alongside military spokesperson Major General Zaw Min Tun. After the coup, the media team became less active.^[14][15]

There is little public information about Tun Tun Nyi’s personal life.^[16][17]
