Tyrone, Oklahoma

Tyrone is a town in Oklahoma in the United States.

The town got its name from a railroad vice president when the train line came through. He named it after Tyrone, Pennsylvania, where his mother lived. Towns along the railroad in Texas County were about 10 miles apart, either because that was how far the workers’ camps were spaced or because steam trains needed water that often.

Nearby, about three miles northeast, there was a place called Shades Well. In the late 1800s, it was a starting point for many cattle drives. At one point, it was even bigger than Dodge City. There are still piles of broken glass there from beer and whiskey bottles left by cowboys. Later, the trailhead moved somewhere else, and Shades Well was left behind.
