The National News Agency of Ukraine (Ukrainian: Українське національне інформаційне агентство), or Ukrinform (Ukrainian: Укрінформ), is a Ukrainian information and news agency, and international broadcaster owned by the Ukrainian government. It was started in 1918 during the Ukrainian War of Independence[6] as the Bureau of Ukrainian Press (BUP). Its first director was Dmytro Dontsov, when they were named The Ukrainian Telegraph Agency.[7]

Ukrinform represents Ukraine in the European Alliance of News Agencies (EANA) and the Black Sea Association of National News Agencies (BSANNA).[8]

Ukrinform shares news stories in Ukrainian, Russian,[5] English, German, Spanish, French, Japanese and Polish.[8]

History

Ukrinform started as the Bureau of Ukrainian Press (BUP) in 1918 and has gone through many reorganizations since then. It was associated with Telegraph Agency of the Soviet Union (TASS) when it was in the Soviet Union.

  • 1918 – It was founded as the Bureau of Ukrainian Press.
  • 1920 – It was renamed to the All-Ukrainian Bureau of the Russian Telegraph Agency (UKROSTA).
  • 1921 – It was renamed to the Radio-Telegraph Agency of Ukraine (RATAU).
  • 1990 – It was renamed to the Ukrainian National Informational Agency (UKRINFORM).
  • 1996 – It was renamed to the State Informational Agency of Ukraine (DINAU).
  • 2000 – It was renamed to the Ukrainian National Informational Agency (UKRINFORM) again.
  • 2015 – Ukrinform joined the Multimedia Broadcasting Platform of Ukraine (UA|TV).[9]
  • 2018 – Ukrinform signed an agreement with the Athens–Macedonian News Agency (ANA) to share news with them.[10]
  • 2025-02-25 - Tetiana Kulyk, the editor-in-chief of the multimedia department and host of the Nation of Invincibles project, was killed by Russian drones at her house during the night.[11][12][13]

What it does

Ukrinform talks about policies and life in Ukraine. It also gives information to the country's government. A decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine from February 19, 1997 says they are independent of all political parties and public organizations.[14]

Every day, Ukrinform shares reports in English, German, Ukrainian, Polish, French, Spanish and Japanese. Ukrinform sends information to the media, TV channels, radio stations, official establishments, local governments, foreign embassies, Ukrainian diplomatic missions abroad and foreign media.[15] In March 2022, the Institute of Mass Information said Ukrinform can be trusted.[16]

Television

FREEДОМ (formerly UATV) is a Russian-language television news channel that focuses on the Russo-Ukrainian War.[17][18] It is broadcasted live on its website, satellite and cable television.[17] It has a YouTube channel in English called UATV English.[19] Before it temporarily closed in January 2020, the channel also broadcasted in English, Ukrainian, Crimean Tatar and Arabic.[5][20]
