Victorino Mapa High School, commonly known as Mapa High School, situated in San Miguel, Manila, Philippines, is one of the oldest public high schools in the city, that opened its first classrooms in June 1923, managed by American principals.
History
In 1921, the Manila city government mandated secondary schools in each of its four districts: Manila North High School, Manila South High School, Manila East High School, and Manila West High School.[2] In June 1930, the four schools in each quadrant were renamed after jurists; Cayetano Arellano (North), Manuel Araullo (South), Victorino Mapa[3] (East), and Florentino Torres (West).
In 1951, Victorino Mapa High School had its first Filipino principal, Indalecio Madamba,[4] who organized its Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), after which Madamba retired in May 1956. Since its founding, the high school had reached record academic populations of up to 11,481 students and faculty numbering 488.[5]
