Vixen (comics)

Vixen (Mari Jiwe McCabe) is a fictional female superhero from Zambesi who adopts the abilities of animals using her Tantu Totem. The character appears in American comic books published by DC Comics. Vixen was created by Gerry Conway and Bob Oksner, first appearing in Action Comics #521 (1981).

Fictional character biography

As a child, Mari saw the greed and corruption that she fights against lead to the deaths of her parents. Later, Mari discovered that the mysterious Tantu Totem—the powerful necklace she inherited from her parents—granted her the ability to take on the attributes of every animal on Earth.

Powers and abilities

She can channel the powers of the animal kingdom by tapping into the morphogenetic field and has been a member of the Birds of Prey, the Checkmate, the Justice League, the Justice League International, the Suicide Squad, and the Ultramarine Corps.

In other media

Two versions of the character appeared in The CW's Arrowverse. The Mari McCabe version debuted in the CW Seed animated series Vixen, voiced by Megalyn Echikunwoke, who also reprised her role in an episode of the live-action parent series, Arrow. Legends of Tomorrow introduced a World War II-era Vixen and Mari's grandmother, Amaya Jiwe, portrayed by Maisie Richardson-Sellers.
