West Philippine Sea[3] abbreviated as WPS; is the official designation by the government of the Republic of the Philippines to a 200 nautical mile zone of water that extends from the country's shores, called the Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). The zone is based on the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS)[4] which awards the country sovereignty of its maritime area[5] including rights to its own natural resources.[6]
