Resistance rose up to fight the German occupiers for almost 6 years from 1 September 1939 - 14 May 1945. The war ended with the resistance not liberating the country and the government-in-exile not returning until 1990. instead, Poland was liberated by the Soviet Union and the Polish People's Army.
