Yenagoa is the capital city of Bayelsa State, Nigeria, and also serves as a local government area.[3] It is located at the Niger-Delta region of the country at coordinates 4°55′29″N 6°15′51″E / 4.92472°N 6.26417°E .
It is home to the Bayelsa State Government House, while the Yenagoa Local Government Area is led by a chairman, also known as the mayor. The LGA covers 706 km² and had an estimated population of about 798,466[4] in 2024. Its postal code is 561.
The majority of people in Yenagoa LGA are from the Epie-Atissa subgroup of the Ijaw people. English is the official language, but local languages are widely spoken. These include Epie-Atissa, Ekpetiama, Central Ijaw, Ogbia, Gbarian, Nembe, Buseni, and Zarama, reflecting the area’s cultural and linguistic diversity.[5]
