Zohran Kwame Mamdani (born October 18, 1991) is an American politician. He has been a member of the New York State Assembly for the 36th district since 2021. He is a member of the Democratic Party and the Democratic Socialists of America. He is the Democratic nominee for Mayor of New York City in the 2025 election.
2025 mayoral campaign
In 2024, Mamdani announced his candidacy for Mayor of New York City in the 2025 mayoral election. If elected, Mamdani would be New York's first Muslim mayor.[4] His campaign has been supported by progressive activists and leaders such as U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders.[5]
In June 2025, Mamdani won the Democratic nomination, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo in an upset victory.[6]
Personal life
Zohran Kwame Mamdani was born in Kampala, Uganda, into a family of Indian descent.[7] When he was five, Mamdani and his family moved to Cape Town, South Africa.[7] His family moved to New York City when Mamdani was seven.[7]
Mamdani graduated from the Bank Street School for Children, and then the Bronx High School of Science.[8] Mamdani attended Bowdoin College in Maine.[9]
In 2018, Mamdani became an American citizen. He is a Shia Muslim.[10][11][12] He married to Syrian-American artist Rama Duwaji in early 2025.[13]
