OccupationMonarch of the Angom dynasty

Angoupamba Kiyamba was the 20th king of the Angom dynasty in Ancient Kangleipak (now Manipur).[1] He is known for wearing Ureksek Chasangba (egret’s feather which had been dyed red, especially reserved for Meitei kings) and killing the Meitei king Nonginphaba.[2][3]

Early life

Angoupamba Kiyamba was born in 1467 CE, the same year Meitei king Kiyamba ascended the throne of the Ningthouja dynasty. Meitei king Lamkiyamba was also born in that year.[4] Angoupamba Kiyamba was the son of Angoupamba Pansha Ngamba and Mangsha Ngambi.[5]

Conflict with the Meitei queen

Queen Chaningphaba, the mother of the Meitei king Nonginphaba was taken to wife by Angoupamba Kiyamba, the king of Angom after the Meitei king Lamkiyamba died. When he decorated himself with Ureksek Chasangpa, Chaningphabi told him that he, being from the house of Angom, was not allowed to wear it. In anger, Angoupamba Kiyamba killed both Nonginphaba and his mother. Both died at the village of Aakakum.[4][5]

Political Influence

Angoupamba Kiyamba became the de facto king of the Ningthouja dynasty for six successive reigns;[5]

  • Meidingu Koiremba (1508–1512 CE)
  • Lamkyamba (1512–1523 CE)
  • Nonginphaba (1523–1524 CE)
  • Kabomba (1524–1542 CE)
  • Tangjamba (1542–1545 CE)
  • Chalamba (1545–1562 CE)

He died during the reign of king Chalamba in 1548 CE.[5][6]
