Bruno Engelmeier ( 5 September 1927 in Vienna, Austria - 2 July 1991) was an Austrian football player and football coach. He played as goalkeeper. At the 1958 FIFA World Cup, Engelmeier was part of the Austrian squad.̹̝
Career
His career began during the war years at SC Rapid Oberlaa. In 1943 he made his debut for the first team. They won the second-tier 1. Klasse Wien A in 1944. The club was eliminated in the promotion playoffs by SK Admira Wien. In 1945 Engelmeier played for SKV Feuerwehr Wien for a few months. He returned to his home club, which was now ranked in the top division after the war. Although the team had little success in the top league the goalkeeper had caught the attention of bigger clubs. He signed with First Vienna FC in 1946.
Engelmeier immediately got a starting place in goal for Vienna. 1952 Vienna signed a second top goalkeeper, Kurt Schmied. The following years were characterized by a battle for the starting position, with the two rivals initially regularly replacing each other. Schmied was able to secure the starting place. Engelmeier was loaned to FC Wien in the spring of 1954. Engelmeier returned to Döbling, where he played as a substitute in the championship-winning 1954/55 season and did not make any league appearances. Engelmeier then secured a regular starting place again. Then Schmied made a greater number of appearances again in the 1957/58 season. Engelmeier left the club and worked for 1. Simmeringer SC for another three years before ending his active career.
International
Engelmeier made his national team debut in September 1949 in a 3-1 win against Czechoslovakia. [1] Despite good club performances, he was overshadowed for a long time by Rapid goalkeeper Walter Zeman and his club colleague Kurt Schmied. 1955 he regained a starting place in the national teams. In 1956, he played regularly. Engelmeier was part of the squad for the 1958 FIFA World Cup, but was one of four players who remained in Austria on call. He played his tenth and final game for Austria in November of that year in a 2-2 draw with Germany in Berlin. [2]
Manager
After his playing career ended, Engelmeier became coach. He led FC Philips Wien to the third-tier Vienna League in 1962. From 1962 to 1964 he was coach of First Vienna FC. He then worked as a volunteer for the Austrian Football Federation (ÖFB), managing the youth team and scouting talent. During the 1965/66 season he also coached Rapid Oberlaa.
