Josef Hamerl (* 22 January 1931 in Vienna - 15 July 2017 [1]) was an Austrian football player. The forward played for Wiener Sport-Club and other teams in Austria. He also played for the Austrian national football team.
Career
Josef Hamerl began his football career after the end of the Second World War with the small clubs ASK Erlaa and SC Siebenhirten. Then he joinined FC Wien in early 1952. He made his league debut in a 2-0 home win against Floridsdorfer AC in the 22nd round, where he immediately shot his first goal. He soon became a regular player. Soon he attracted the interest of several top Austrian clubs. In the spring of 1955he moved to Austria Wien . Because he spent most of the time on the bench he returned after six months to FC Wien. 1956 he moved to Wiener Sport-Club. Together with Walter Horak, Adolf Knoll, Erich Hof and Karl Skerlan, he formed the famous Sport-Club strike force. He and his team remained undefeated for two years (41 matches). Perhaps his most famous performance was in the European Cup. He scored four goals in the legendary 7-0 victory over Italian champions Juventus Turin.
In 1961 Hamerl, along with fellow striker Karl Skerlan, moved to Admira Vienna. After only two years with Admira, he returned to Sport-Club. There he was unable to repeat his successful years. Hamerl played his last season in the Austrian league in 1967 for 1. Wiener Neustädter SC. The year before he played for Kapfenberger SV. He scored 158 goals in Austria's top division.
International
His first match for the Austrian national football team was on 23 March 1958 in a 3-2 win over Italy. His last match was a 1-0 loss versus Egypt on 5 January 1962. He played 9 matches and scored 2 goals. [2]
