The California State Legislature is a bicameral legislature for the state of California in the United States. It has a lower house, the California State Assembly, with 80 members, and an upper house, the California State Senate, with 40 members.^[1] Both houses meet at the California State Capitol in Sacramento. It is one of ten full-time state legislatures in the United States.

Since 1996, the Democratic Party has controlled both houses.
