China–Philippines relations
There are diplomatic relations between the People's Republic of China and the Philippines.
The Chinese leader Xi Jinping visited the Philippines, as late as 2018.[1]
Then-president of the Philippines, Rodrigo Duterte, visited China as late as 2019.[2]
In regard to the Belt and Road initiative: In 2023, the Philippines (pulled out, or) withdrew from the Belt and Road initiative; That happened during the presidency of Bongbong Marcos.[3]
Territorial disputes
There are territorial disputes between China and the Philippines.
Spratly Islands; The two countries have disputes over the sovereignty of some islands and shoals in the Spratly Islands.[4][5]
Near Scarborough Shoal
In the area near Scarborough Shoal (map) there have been incidents involving ships from the navies of China and the Philippines. As late as August 11, 2025, a ship (BRP Suluan), from the Phillipines Coast Guard, was chased by ships belonging to the Chinese government; Two of the Chinese ships crashed with each other.[6] A U.S. destroyer came to the area (August 13); That was the first time in 6 years, that a U.S. warship came close to the shoal.[7]
Earlier (and in year 2012), the 2012 Scarborough Shoal standoff happened.[8]
