Death penalty in the Gaza Strip
Authorities use the death penalty in the Gaza Strip to punish certain major crimes.
Despite the tropes and misinformation about executions in Gaza,[1][2] only three crimes are punishable by the death penalty: murder, "collaboration with hostile entities", and drug trafficking.[3][4]
History
A mixture of Islamic law and secular (non-religious) law governs the death penalty in Gaza. Some of the secular law was established by the British when the places now within Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory were both in Mandatory Palestine. One of these secular laws was he Penal Law No. 74, which was approved in 1936.[5]
As of December 2018, the courts of the Gaza Strip had issued 186 death sentences. One hundred twenty-eight of these were issued after 2007.[6][7]
Mahmoud Ishtiwi
On 7 February 2016, Al-Qassam killed Mahmoud Ishtiwi, one of their group's top commanders. Rumours said that his crimes included homosexuality and theft.[8]
