The Democratic Party (Italian: Partito Democratico, PD) is a social democratic political party in Italy. Elly Schlein has served as the party's secretary since her election in 2023.[1]
From the birth of the Conte II Cabinet, the Democratic Party formed a coalition with the Five Star Movement.
Since 2014, the party has been a member of the Center-left Party of European Socialists group in the European Parliament.
History
The party was formed in 2007 from the merger of several centre-left parties. These parties included the Democrats of the Left (which succeeded the Italian Communist Party) and the Democracy is Freedom party (commonly known as The Daisy).
