Domee Shi (Chinese: 石之予; pinyin: Shí Zhīyǔ; born September 8, 1989) is a Canadian-Chinese filmmaker, storyboard artist, and animator. She has worked at Pixar Animation Studios since 2011.
Biography
Shi was born in Chongqing, China, and moved to Canada with her family at age two. She grew up in Toronto and was inspired by her father, a university art professor, as well as animated films from Studio Ghibli and Disney.[1] She studied animation at Sheridan College, graduating in 2011.[2]
She began her career at Pixar as a storyboard artist, contributing to films including Inside Out (2015), The Good Dinosaur (2015), Incredibles 2 (2018), and Toy Story 4 (2019).
Shi directed the short film Bao (2018), becoming the first woman to direct a short at Pixar. The film premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and received critical acclaim. She later directed Pixar's feature film Turning Red (2022) and is set to direct Elio (2025).
