Hernádszurdok
Hernádszurdok (Slovak: Surdok) is a village in Gönc District in Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County, Hungary. In 2024, 203 people lived there.
Location
It is 57 km northeast of Miskolc. Nearby villages include Hidasnémeti 2 km north, Tornyosnémeti 6 km north, and Garadna 8 km south; the closest town is Gönc, 6 km east. It also borders Göncruszka to the southeast, Hernádvécse to the southwest, and Hernádpetri to the west, but there are no direct roads to these places.
History
Hernádszurdok, once called Szurdokbénye, is an old settlement. Its name first appeared in documents in 1234 as Byna de Zurduk. Until the early 16th century, it was known as Surdokbénye. The area's borders were also noted. Over time, the village had various owners. By the early 16th century, it became part of the city of Košice. Later it became an independent village called Hernádszurdok.
Population
In 2022, 89.4% of the population identified as Hungarian, 8.9% as Roma, 6.7% as Slovak, 0.6% as German, and 0.6% as other non-native nationalities (7.8% did not respond; due to dual identities, the total may exceed 100%). By religion, 25% were Roman Catholic, 27.2% were Reformed, 5% were Greek Catholic, and 1.7% had no denomination (40.6% did not answer).[1]
