Our Great National Parks is a 2022 Netflix documentary series about some of the world's national parks and their wildlife. It was presented by Barack Obama, a former president of the United States.[1]

Reception

The series was received very well by critics. Daniel Fienberg of the Hollywood Reporter noted that Obama explained how government-protected nature reserves and nearby human populations can live well together and used humor to make animals seem more like humans. He also said the way he speaks, including intentional pauses, are a "perfect" way to show nature, and that it does not try too hard to be educational, but despite it not presenting a lot of new information, it is mostly attractive and sometimes "breathtaking".[2]

Jef Rouner of the Houston Press called the series "the single most calming thing on television" and said "What truly sets Our Great National Parks apart, though, is the message woven into the episodes. Pragmatically, Obama tells us how various parts of humanity have made preserving the wild world a priority."[3]

Karla Peterson of the San Diego Union Tribune says the series is "devoted to the eye-popping, heart-stopping, consciousness-raising wonders of the world’s most astounding national parks."[4]

The Daily Telegraph negatively compared Obama's performance to David Attenborough's work. It said the series is "dazzlingly gorgeous yet a long way short of groundbreaking" and that "where David Attenborough enthusiastically brings to life the tooth and claw rhapsody of the natural world, Obama sounds stilted, even bored."[5]
