Zsujta

Zsujta (Slovak: Žujta) is a village in Gönc District of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County. Its population in 2024 was 245.

Location

It is located in the Hernád Valley, near the Slovak border. It is north of Gönc and southwest of Abaújvár. Neighboring settlements are Abaújvár, Gönc, Hidasnémeti, and Tornyosnémeti.

History

Zsujta and its area have been inhabited since ancient times, as shown by valuable Bronze Age findings discovered in the 1800s near its borders. Zsujta is a settlement from the 1200s. Its name was first mentioned in 1219 as Sucta in the Váradi Regestrum document. Later, it was written as Sugta or Sugtha in 1295 and Sugkta in the early 14th century. In the early 14th century, it was described as the village of János, the castellan of Gönc, and a document says it was destroyed by Bárcai Edus, a servant of Copoz. Over time, Zsujta was owned by the Karsa, Puky, Szécsy, and then the Vendéghy families. In the 1910 census, Zsujta had 479 residents: 471 were Hungarian, 5 were Slovak, with 236 Roman Catholics, 173 Reformed, and 52 Jewish people.

Population

In 2022, 94.4% of the population identified as Hungarian, 16.7% as Roma, 2.3% as Slovak, 0.5% as German, and 0.9% as other non-local nationalities (4.2% did not respond; due to dual identities, the total may exceed 100%). Regarding religion, 44.7% were Roman Catholic, 38.1% Reformed, 2.8% Greek Catholic, 0.5% other Christian, and 3.3% non-religious (9.8% did not answer).[1]
