The Regional Municipality of York, also called York Region, is a regional municipality in south-central Ontario, Canada, between Lake Simcoe and Toronto. It replaced the old York County in 1971. In 2021, about 1,173,334 people were living in the Regional Municipality of York.[1] It is the fastest growing region in Canada and it is expected to grow to more than 1.5 million people by 2031.[2] The whole region is part of the Greater Toronto Area and is part of the Golden Horseshoe. The capital of the region is in Newmarket.
Geography
York Region covers 1,776 square kilometres from Lake Simcoe in the north to the city of Toronto in the south. The eastern border is shared with Durham Region. To the west is Peel Region, and Simcoe County is to the northwest.

There is also one First Nation (Native Canadians) with an Indian reserve, where the Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation live.
York Region includes farmlands, wetlands and small kettle lakes, the Oak Ridges Moraine and over 2,070 hectares of regional forest, as well as built-up areas of its towns.
