Baskó
Baskó (Rusyn: Башко) is a village in Gönc District of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén County. Its population in 2024 was 155.
Location
The village located in the central part of the Zemplén Mountains, about 60 kilometers northeast of Miskolc, the county capital. The nearest town, Abaújszántó, is about 16 kilometers to the northeast. The area is covered with forests, and the surrounding mountains are high. Near its border, four mountain peaks reach between 650 and 700 meters in height.
The neighboring settlements are: Mogyoróska to the north, Erdőhorváti to the east, Erdőbénye and Sima to the south, Boldogkőújfalu to the southwest, Boldogkőváralja to the west, and Arka and Fony to the northwest.
History
Baskó and its surroundings have been inhabited since ancient times, as proven by Stone Age remains found near the village in the 1800s. The first written record of Baskó dates back to 1388, when its residents mainly lived from forestry.
In the 14th century, King Zsigmond granted the village to the Czudar family. During the 15th and 16th centuries, it belonged to Serbian despot George Branković. Later, it became the property of the Szapolyai family and was then acquired by the Trautson family. They repopulated the nearly abandoned village with Rusyn settlers.
Population
In 2022, 95.5% of the population identified as Hungarian, 47.4% as Rusyn, 0.6% as German, 0.6% as Romanian, and 0.6% as other non-local nationalities (4.5% did not respond; due to dual identities, the total may exceed 100%). Regarding religion, 3.2% were Roman Catholic, 0.6% Reformed, 78.8% Greek Catholic, 1.3% other Christian, 0.6% Orthodox, and 1.9% non-religious (13.5% did not answer).[1]
