Surrey Central is a train station in Surrey, British Columbia. It is located at 10277 City Parkway. It is owned by TransLink and is used by the SkyTrain in the Metro Vancouver area for their Expo Line.
The station was built in 1994 and opened on March 28. It was first going to be called 104 Avenue but after a naming contest, BC Transit officially named the station Surrey Central in December 1992.[1] Due to the Whalley Exchange bus loop in the area, the station was originally called Whalley Central during the planning phase.[2] It is named after the Whalley and City Centre area it is located in. It is an elevated station, featuring two tracks and a centre platform. It is preceded by the Gateway towards Waterfront and ends with the terminus at King George. In 2024, it was ranked at #5 of the 54 busiest stations in use for the SkyTrain.[3]
Throughout its opening, the area and station grew a reputation for crime and drug activity. Residents reported feeling unsafe being around the station.[4][5] Due to this, Metro Vancouver Transit Police stepped up their patrols of the station and surrounding area to attempt to reduce criminal activity.[6]
A new entrance was built for the station on the North End was opened on March 2, 2019, costing $24.3-million.[7] It is a glass-walled, wood-ceiling building with three escalators, three staircases, and one elevator. A suspended art piece titled 'The Sea Captain’ by indigenous artist Marianne Nicolson was also added in the entrance's building.[8]
The station serves as a connection for the R1 King George Blvd TransLink bus service.[9]
