The Rochester Red Wings are a Minor League Baseball team from Rochester, New York.[1] They play baseball at the Triple-A (AAA) level, the most difficult level before Major League Baseball, against other baseball teams in the International League (a group of 20 baseball teams at the same level).[1] The Bats are partnered with the Washington Nationals, a Major League Baseball team. When a player shows that he plays well at this level, he may be moved up to play for the Nationals.
The team started playing baseball in 1899 as the Rochester Bronchos. The team changed their name to the Rochester Hustlers in 1908, Rochester Colts in 1921, and Rochester Tribe in 1922. They changed it to "Red Wings" in 1929 because they were partnered with the St. Louis Cardinals, whose mascot is a cardinal.[1] Rochester is the oldest continuously operating sports team in North America below the major league level.
The Red Wings have played at a stadium called Innovative Field since 1997. Before that, they played at Silver Stadium (1929–1996), Bay Street Ball Grounds (1908–1928), and Culver Field (1899–1907).
